Pictures, Pictures Everywhere! Part 1

July 12, 2:56pm - Thailand, Khao San Road

A picture is worth a thousand words, as everyone who complains about the lack of pictures on this blog keeps telling me. So for those illiterate people who can't appreciate the written word, I've created a bit of a photojournal to appease you.

I'm sure some people are masters at integrating pictures into Blogger, but it was a fricking chore for me. I only seem to be able to load in a picture to the top of the frame, so I have to load them up last pictue first. Also, everytime I mess with ANYTHING all of the formatting gets messed up. So I'm sorry about the bad formatting quality of this post. Combine this with the (extremely) bad quality of the computer I'm on, and its restrictions, and i've ended up working on this for about 2 hours. Take this as a sign of how badly I want to pander to my readers :). There will be a pictures part 2 once I can get to it tomorrow, and once I get home i'll load many many more pictures onto Facebook (this is only about 1/4 of them). But for now, enjoy!

Welcome to Thailand!

My first meal in Thailand: Pad Thai, served fresh from a stall on the street and costing about 20-30 Baht ($1). This has proved to be the staple of my diet here, and serves as anything from a breakfast to 3am snack!

On my first day journeying around I came upon a relic of Thailand's massive sexual education campaign. See the below pictures for some of the things stored in a restaurant/museum chronicling Thailand's sex ed efforts... small children avert your eyes!
The funniest and most disturbing thing I saw was this gigantic poster (the picture doesn't do its size justice) of various sexual positions and whether or not condoms or swallowing was allowed. I believe they posted these in a lot of public places or in brothels and such, I'm not sure. Either way, can you imagine the collective fit in some circles if these ever came to the states?

Its a bird, its a plane, its CONDOM MAN!

This guy reminds me a bit of the enemy from Pirates 2, or like a cross between an octopus and a person.

The Mona Lisa, with Condom in hand!

On one of my first nights here I went with Snow to grab dinner and she brought her friends. Not only has Snow made my trip awesome by giving me advice and guidance and hanging out with me, she and her friends are responible for my first culinary adventure whilst in Thailand.

They took me to Chinatown and offered me up the following dish without explanation. What turned out to be Pig Heart, Intestine, Stomach, and Lung... Yummy!
Me eating the offending dish... bottoms up!
The next part of the meal (at another stall) is some kind of chicken dish with lots of other ingredients... although I had never seen anything like it before, pretty tame for Thailand.

My tormentors, two of Snow's friends, although I guess I can't be super upset since they are eating the same stuff they fed me :)
My humble abode for a good part of the trip thus far... its on Rambuttri road, next to Khao San Road (Khao San is the big tourist road) and though its a tad expensive for what you get ($12/night), they are huge on security, and i've come to trust them a lot in my many interactions. You can't really pay enough for that here.

For those of you looking for a laugh, here is the nice bathroom/shower combination common in most of the budget guest houses around here:

For the Bostonites reading this, We love that dirty water! However for everyone else, the site of the main river flowing through Bangkok must turn your stomach a bit. This was taken from one of the ferries that moves lots of locals up and down (North and South) in Bangkok. Also included is a shot of a beautiful bridge towering in the skyline.
The bridge: For those in Boston again, doesn't it remind you of the Lenny Zakim bridge?

The Sights of the Jatujak (JJ, Weekend) Market. Below are some of the stalls I passed and looked in as I walked around. For each of the pictures I took there had to be 3 or 4 of the same places next door, and for food there were rows and rows of places all around!
Books and Books and Books...
A cool dragon set in Jade, and designed to bring shopkeepers good luck and fortune
A footballer's paradise!
There were a lot of cool, handmade arts and crafts stalls in and around the market, including this one that made handcrafted signs

one question: how much pad thai can you eat before it begins to taste like just another dish of pad thai?
